in The Spears of Twilight I read a myth and

in this myth a woman became the wife of the river spirits,

seated near the tortoise, the anacondas, and chained jaguars,

tapping their snouts with a stick,

and she came to the surface of the water to see her people but they only wanted to kill her

for she had gained the power of creating maize,

of controlling the animals of the forest,

of being above them,

and so she stayed in the lake forever with her husband, never to return to the earth
