seethingblue's Diaryland Diary

poems for and about the anonymous

the tissue paper rustles beneath your thighs and of course everything is cold and clinical,

i told you i wanted to write a really good prose poem,

i couldn't get tickets to hear richard ford,

and put cornstarch in the muffins because it felt like baking powder

and i bake a lot these days

did you know

i see a magazine with drew barrymore on it and remember her pastel rainbow skirt in E.T.

you still cut out the eiffel tower,

you still leave the stems on the spinach

but did you know that chimpanzees share 98 percent of their genes with humans

that dust is mainly human skin

that babies can swim underwater

the rain stopped coming

and i dreamt i lost my gray umbrella and was too self-conscious to wear a slicker or galoshes and the water dripped down my arms in nonsensical patterns and i had no patience to wait for you beneath withered-branched trees and i emailed joy harjo to tell her i was going to give a speech and was very afraid but instead we exchanged recipes and don't you know bananas are an excellent substitute for conditioner and cinammon can go in coffee and cafe au lait is traditionally drunk in a bowl and i will never see that first cafe in vienna

i may never make it out
