seethingblue's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- port colborne i want to travel again. to port colborne, canada right on lake erie- just two hours away from niagra falls. i love it there- the way the town is constructed around canals, the way tiny candy shops and book stores line the canals and families still own refreshment stands where homemade lemonade is sold. we visited a house where my uncle was staying while he did a series of plays with a local canadian acting troupe. the family had rented their house out to visiting actors, opting to live in their house boat all summer on the lake. inside, the navy blue carpet looked brand-new, freshly vacuumed and family pictures placed carefully in collage frames hung across living room walls with their nautical wallpaper. i sunk into the couch as my uncle introduced his friends, a man and two women. one of the women was studying linguistics at the university of toronto and had my grandparents speak into a tape recorder so that she could study their floridian southern dialect. i studied a picture resting on the fireplace mantel. a slender, middle-aged woman with short brown hair. a broad-shouldered man with five o'clock shadow and a hunter green polo shirt. one teen-aged boy, taller than his father, dark brown hair, braces. and their daughter, perfect skin, perfect long brown hair grazing the straps of her sundress, and a smile exhibiting clean, white teeth. 12:03 - 01 July, 2002 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
